Cass Vinyl Interview
How did you first fall in love with vinyl?

I’ve always been a huge fan of CDs and getting to hold an album that you love. I love that vinyl is a physically bigger form of physical media and that artists can be even more creative with their art.

What’s the story behind your current setup?

I wanted to create a cozy area in my room that didn’t feel too cramped. I love little decorations and knick-knacks, so I am trying to find some more cute trinkets and accessories to add to my setup eventually.

What kind of records are you most drawn to collecting?

I love colored pressings because they give the artist and their team more creativity to match the album cover or vibes.

Do you have a most-prized record in your collection?

I have a few records that I would consider my most prized. My top three are probably Drowning by Jessie Murph, a signed copy of Me Again by Sasha Alex Sloan, and the Lover: Live From Paris by Taylor Swift repress.

If your setup had a theme song, what would it be?

“I Hate It Here” by Taylor Swift, because vinyl and my little setup is my version of “the secret gardens in my mind.”

What’s your favorite part about being in the vinyl community?

I love being able to see the way that other people create their setups, and I love learning about new music.

You also have a dance Instagram page — how did that start, and how does it connect to the music community?

I have danced basically my whole life, and my goal is to dance professionally. I love bringing other people’s vision to life. I have always been surrounded by music and have so much appreciation for it. Art in general can make people realize that there are other people in the world going through similar things, and music has always done that for me.

How has collecting vinyl inspired your creativity in other areas of your life?

Vinyl has made me focus on smaller things and details more. Like, how intricate some of the packaging is, or picking out a tiny color in the album cover to be the pressing color.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out collecting?

Try not to get caught up in FOMO or what’s trending/not trending. Collect the albums that you like, not the ones everyone else is getting. Obviously, still keep your options open and be open to expanding your music taste if that’s something you like to do, but if you just get an album because it’s popular, then you’re never gonna spin it or truly appreciate it.
