Hunting With Lisa

Record Shopping Tips
Tip #1

Always Inspect Under the Light

Check every inch of a record before buying.

“I once went on a 4 and a half hour road trip to California and hit up a very popular record store. I bought a Blackbyrds album without checking it first. After my long drive home, I found that it wasn’t playable at all. It was warped with a huge scratch! Lesson learned!”

Tip #2

Know Your Pressings

Original pressings sound warmer & hold value.

“Original pressings usually sound warmer and hold more value. Colorful and picture discs look great, but they often come with more surface noise. (For the record: there’s nothing wrong with a quality reissue).”

Tip #3

Build Relationships

Get to know your local shop owners—they’ll look out for you.

“As soon as I moved to Vegas, I got familiar with Dave at Vegas Vinyl. He would open up early for me, set aside albums that he knew I’d like, and I always got a great deal on large hauls.”

Tip #4

Timing Is Everything

Be there early—new collections and restocks go fast.

“Get to the record store bright and early on weekends when they put out the week’s best finds. Go on new release day (often Friday) or right after restocks so you get first pick before rare finds are gone. I also like going midday to avoid the crowds.”

Tip #5

Trust Your Ears

Build the collection you love—not just the hyped grails.

“Chase the grails if you want, but the real treasure is building a collection that reflects your taste and the music you truly love.”
